Has anyone had any luck making the integrated firewire controller on the 8RGA+ work properly in RedHat 9? My system does a hard lock when it tries to initalize it on startup.

I vaguely recall hearing about an initalization issue before, but I'd appreciate it if someone could fill me in.

I think tyou'll need to upgrade your kernel to at least 4.21 RC5 to enable firewire, Redhat9's stock kernel is too old and hasn't gone nforce support for firewire, ata100 or decent sound.
