Default GTX 280 dead?

I'm not sure if I've finally burned my GTX 280, or if its some serious driver issues under windows xp 32.

This card has been running non stop since August with hardly any problems. However, I woke up today and found my computer rebooted, possibly due to some Microsoft auto patches.

Any time I'd boot windows, I'd get a corrupted screen and cursor.

I've tried every solution known to man to get it working decently again with hardly any success.

System restore to the previous date, did'nt resolve.

Removed the driver, used driver sweep, and reinstalled the driver, did'nt resolve.

Went downgrading one driver step at a time, where I'm at 182.08, 182.05, 181.22, 181.20, did'nt resolve.

I have one screen now, and can get any resolutions, when I try to attach the TV, it crashes with either blue, white, green, yellow screens.

Any attempt to query Cuda, either through pure boinc (gpugrid was detached in safe mode), or other cuda apps, color crash.

The crash will not go by a soft reboot or shut down, I have to hard shutdown, unplug the power cable, wait a minute, and then power up again.

Otherwise, if I don't wait for a minute, the graphics card will blow its fan in full throttle during the boot up while not displaying anything on screen.

What am I missing?

Is the screen garbled when it first boots up on the bios screen or only when in windows. If it is in the bios screen during bootup it is a hardware issue.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The garbled screen happened under windows, not BIOS.

Well that's good news. It is related to software. Have you tried a different driver.

Rolled back to 5 driver downgrades, and driver sweeped between each.

Whats odd, is that the sweep will delete all left overs, except for 4 files, which consistently shows up. Can't remember the exact name but one was nv4panel something .dll which is around 4 MB.

This is after dropping to dos, windows/system32 and related folders, do a manual delete, its gone on first dir search, do another dir search, and it shows up again!

Could windows be over protective with its system files through some mechanism that I need to disable?

Have you tried running driver cleaner in safe mode?

Mostly sweeps in normal mode!

Will try safe mode later today in an hour or two and report back.

Thanks for the VERY VERY quick responses.

Booted in safe mode, deleted GTX 280 driver, rebooted again in safe mode, ran driver sweep, now there is ZERO left overs.

Booted normal, installed generic VGA, windows could'nt complete this step so it was skipped.

Installed 182.08, rebooted, nvidia auto prompted to change resolution to 1280x1024, did that step: garbled blue screen!

Rebooted in normal mode, went to windows built in display properties, bumped resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024 with out a crash.

Writing this message now, and now I assure you, if I attach my TV or query CUDA, I will crash!

Reinstalling windows did cross my mind, but its a last last resort!

I'm slowly heading into thinking its REALLY burned!

Other forums suggested that I reinstall XP, since I had windows 7 lying around and never really tested it, I went for that path.

Still garbled after installing 7.

I switched the PCI-E slot, still garbled!

Only thing I have'nt tried is try to change the power rails, since my antec 850 has built in pci-e rails and 2 free connectors that I need to get cables for.

And last but not least, try a different motherboard.

leave it in the bios for 10-30 mins to see if anything happens

EDIT: I see you installed windows 7 so nothing would happen in the bios because it would have garbled when installing 7 hope you fix it!
