Default No video on 30" Dell WFP 3007 monitor

I'm a Linux newbie and I'm having trouble getting video to display on my Dell 3007 WFP 30" monitor with an NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M video card.

The monitor runs natively at 2560x1600, and the FX 570M works just fine at this resolution under Widows Vista. This is a dual-boot Lenovo T61p notebook with Vista and Ubuntu 8.10.

When running Ubuntu, video displays fine on the laptop display, but when connected to the 30" Dell monitor I get the Ubuntu startup progress bar and then a black screen and the monitor goes to sleep mode.

I tried Nvidia drivers 173 and 177 and now 180.29 and all had the same result - fine on the laptop screen, but no luck on the 30" monitor.

I would really appreciate any advice on getting the settings right for this to work.

Cheers,
Omar

Use nvidia-settings on your laptop and go to the xorg section, run detect displays then select the dell monitor and select make primary display (or some such) and hit apply. laptop screen should shut off and 30" should be primary.

Thanks nevion - I did what you suggested, but it's not quite what I hoped to get.

In the X Server Display Configuration the 30" Dell is shown as disabled. I can click on Configure and enable it in TwinView and it works fine - both screens are displaying properly, but only for this session. All settings are forgotten after shutdown.

I tried selecting "Separate X screen (requires X restart)" but got into trouble with it and had to run in low-graphics mode to create a new profile and get any video at all.

Saving to xorg.conf fails because it's unable to remove the old backup file (I'm not logged in as root).

I almost never use the computer in dual-display, so I'd like to set it where I don't have to open the laptop to log in and set the display configuration.

Where should I go from here?

Thanks!
