Hmmm i wonder if this will solve the issue EVGA X58 mobos have with cod4 punkbuster?

When i first enter a cod4 server i get fps spikes every 3 seconds which causes it to stutter this only lasts for around 1-2 minutes untill the punkbuster 'heartbeats' stop and then everything is smooth as silk again. My ping stays stable at around 25ms during this process but my fps is affected....could the pb heartbeats be putting stress onto the 1 core of my core i7 causing it to do this? after all the pnkbstra and pnkbstrb services are activated remotley from the pb master servers and have to go through the onboard ethernet causng extra cpu stress for that core....might sound daft for a core I7 to do this but punkbuster uses a lower level API that not many progs use at all.....

just a thought lol perhaps im talking crap

For a user with a network connection with 10/10 or ADSL i dont think anyone has any use for it. But for users with a real 100mbit connection or even 1gbit for thoose few that has it in big cities maybe it can make a small difference. I can see that downloading 10-20mb/s with such a card while playing games can be worth it i guess it offloads cpu load, but for the price its insane to think there is a big market for this.

Thought I would go ahead and let you guys know about the EVGA loaner program if you didn't know already. Offers a 2 week test drive and you get to write a review on their site. I didn't mention it sooner because I was signed up for the 3Dvision loaner and X58 loaner but they are closed now and I don't mind if I don't get chosen to test the NIC.
Anyway here you go:

- Test and you would see max 10%)
- Decreases latency by about 6ms
- USB 2.0 for downloading wares from bittorrent while playing games
- Headphone and mic jacks for optimizing VOIP services like team speak
- Cost $130
I still say any separate dedicated NIC (cheap) would do the same (minus USB/VOIP) in relation to the onboard nic which will eat CPU cycles just like onboard sound in a single CPU based system.) In the old days (P3 days), you would saturate the CPU with Gigabit Ethernet and thus a dedicated (processor+memory) NIC was required. Now a days, any P4 or multi core CPU should be able to handle this, however unloading anything from "on-board" would help.

I may pick one up and do some side by side tests with a cheap ($20 10/100/1000) NIC when they are released this April.

Are there optimizations I can make to my onboard NIC to improve it for gaming?

Yeah they are still expensive, but it is nothing like the original card when it was released and cost $250 with fewer features. If they can prove they can beat a good plug-in card like a Intel NIC, and also have additional features that can be very useful I might get one.

I saw this on Anandtech
http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/...spx?i=3534&p=5

Built-in bandwidth control which can be pretty useful if you run multiple net apps and have limited bandwidth.
