mtessier, Thank you very much for shipping me the card. I've now reproduced one of the 3 failure modes with the failing card. I'll investigate and see what's up...

Default Re: VDPAU error "NNNN 60 5" and "NNNN 43 5"

This is a note to all users seeing error message "NNNN 60 5", and in particular, users forsgump, Morkl, bluebenno, amok404:

We haven't been able to reproduce your issue at all. Given what we know about the "NNNN 43 5" issue, we suspect the two issues are different.

We would like to attempt to reproduce the "NNNN 60 5" problem. However, we suspect we will need the actual graphics boards you have, and not simply one of the same model. Is anyone willing to lend their card to use for this purpose? We will pay shipping. Please PM me if so. We might be able to arrange to ship you a replacement card first, if this makes a difference.

Either way, we'd like to get more details on the specific video card models you have (i.e. the model name, part number, etc. the manufacturer sells the card as). If you have a link to the website/store/... where you purchased the card, so we can see exact model information, that'd be great.

Thanks for any information or help at all. Unfortunately, the chances of solving this issue are very low, unless we can reproduce it. Sorry!

Default Re: VDPAU error "NNNN 60 5" and "NNNN 43 5"

Hi! I seem to be experiencing similar problems, as described earlier. My system contains a AMD 790X chipset and a "Palit 9500GT Super" GPU.

1) Does this problem reproduce on the latest drivers; please try both 180.41 and 185.13
Atleast with 180.51 and 185.18

2) Please try upgrading your system BIOS (see motherboard/PC manufacturer)
Upgraded to latest - no change.

3) Please try upgrading your video BIOS (see motherboard/PC manufacturer for integrated GPUs, see video card manufacturer for plugin cards)
Palit has none available, afaik.

4) Does the problem happen 100% of the time. Does it only happen after hibernate/resume, or after cold power cycles and reboots too?
100% of the time

5) Are you running any OpenGL applications (or compositing managers) or any other applications that use video (Xv) or VDPAU? Can you try starting a bare X server (e.g. choose a cut-down X session from the X display manager, or quit X, log in via SSH, start X by running "sudo X", then run your VDPAU application from SSH too)
Gnome desktop environment without compositing and bare x-session with only a xterm tested.

6) Do you have any unusual PCI cards plugged in. Does the issue occur if you remove them?
Did not try removing Audigy2 and SCSI-card, not too unusual hardware.

7) Have you overclocked any of your CPU, RAM, or video card? Does the issue occur if you don't?
No overclocking.

8) Anything else different/unusual about your setup?
No

9) Do you see any messages in your system log of the form "NVRM: Xid: ..."

Code:
kern.log:Jun 14 10:47:40 discovery kernel: [161197.198290] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000003

Information about the GPU can be found here. The s/n tag on the box in which my 9500gt came in says "GF9500GT 512M DDR2 128B CRT DVI HDMI" and "P/N:NE29500THHD51-PM8796"

Attached files contain nvidia bugreport log and a log from mplayer failing to decode video. Hope this info is enough

So, same behavior, but different error.

Also, I found the service manual of my laptop. It has some info & schematics that may be useful (or maybe not).
BTW, If anybody finds where my GPU is (physically), I would like to know, so I could put Arctic Silver on it, because temps don't go lower than 80șC (currently 84șC while browsing).

Default Re: VDPAU error "NNNN 60 5", "NNNN 58 5", and "NNNN 43 5"

This message is for users experiencing the following error codes with drivers up to and including 185.18.14:

"NNNN 43 5"
Including users: DeiF, vinbiz, saly, cocos, mtessier

And most likely also the following error code (although this is not confirmed yet; we have yet to directly test hardware displaying these symptoms):

"NNNN 58 5"
Including users: opiz, Teme, moliones, reno31

However, we do NOT believe it refers to the following error code, which we have not yet reproduced:

"NNNN 60 5"
Including users: forsgump, Morkl, bluebenno, amok404

If VDPAU emits the above error messages on a GPU which was labelled or specified as supporting PureVideo (please also check the VDPAU documentation in the 190.xx README), one possible reason is a board hardware defect. After ruling out any other software or hardware problems, NVIDIA recommends returning the GPU to the manufacturer for a replacement.

Note that drivers before up to and including 185.18.14 will emit the error codes above, and will return VDP_STATUS_ERROR (25) when calling either vdp_device_create_x11() ("NNNN 43 5") or VdpDecoderCreate() ("NNNN 58 5"). Drivers after 185.18.14 have been modified to detect this problem more specifically. On affected boards, VPDAU will now return VDP_STATUS_NO_IMPLEMENTATION (1) when calling vdp_device_create_x11(), and emit a varying (version-specific) debug error code "0 NNNN" instead of those listed above. Note that not all debug error codes of that form indicate this problem.

Notes to users who believe they are affected by this issue: Please install 185.18.14, set environment variable VDPAU_NVIDIA_DEBUG=3, run a VDPAU application, and record the VPDAU debug error message that is printed, the VDPAU function that is failing, and the error code it returns. Then, upgrade to a newer driver and perform the same experiment. If the VDPAU debug error message, failing function, and function error code change in the way described in the previous paragraph, you are most likely affected by this problem. If you need help interpreting the error messages, please post the error messages (from both driver versions), along with an nvidia-bug-report, to this forum thread, and an NVIDIA engineer will validate the information.

I get a blank screen after installing the 190.16 BETA driver. Can't tell you more, i am unable to switch to a VTY to see whats happening.

Ok...190.18 BETA works fine, but vdpinfo gives me:

gabi@rossak:~/download/vdpinfo$ ./vdpinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 0 5435
VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace:

01: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xb7a61b42] vdp_imp_device_create_x11
Error creating VDPAU device: 1

So it seams that i am among the users who has a hardware defect. I hope my future desktop ( GTX 275 ) will not be plagued by this hardware "inperfection".
