BTW, regarding the HW problem... does anybody have any clues to repair it?

It would be good if NVIDIA had a diagnosing tool to answer these questions (i.e. to tell which parts of the GPU are failing, or whether the problem is external, etc).

In my particular case, the laptop is out of guarantee and so far the only problem is vdpau/dxva acceleration not working (yes, in Windows too, as far as I tried).
I'm not going to send the laptop for repair/replacing as this would cost me almost the price of a new laptop.

So, I was wondering, if the cause is anything easy repaired like a bad capacitor failing, or some bus not receiving enough power due to a short circuit in other place, or something easy like these (which doesn't require replacing the entire GPU), then I could try to repair it, as I'm an electronic hobbyist.
But I don't know where to start. I don't even know how the GPU IC looks like (e.g. what symbols are printed on it, what size I should expect, how far/near from other parts is,etc).
I even have the service manual, but it's confusing as hell.

Or maybe I should forget this problem and live with it.

DeiF, the problem isn't a failed part, it's more of a part selection issue. There is no way it can possibly be fixed beyond replacing the board. Yes, it should equally affect Windows too.

phuh after some really exciting circle of "security" to register I'm able to post! (banned free accounts are pain in the ...)

Put that aside. I would like to ask for some help. I bought the parts of my computer so it could playback any kind of media along with 1080p HD movies. Theoretically.

I compiled mplayer from svn and using the 185th version of the NV driver. I tried some workaround and thought the problem lies within me. But after I read through this topic I realize the problem should be my hardware.

The culprit:

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] (rev a1)

Theoretically it's supported by VDPAU.

Making a long story short:

./vdpinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
VDPAU capture: Enabled
vdp_imp_device_create_x11(0x8c51008, 0, -, -)
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 0 5471
VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace:
--: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xb7b69000] DSO load base
00: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xb7b6d149]
01: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xb7b6e872] vdp_imp_device_create_x11
-> 1
Error creating VDPAU device: 1

Xinerama is disabled.

I have the feeling I have the NNNN 58 5 bug. I would send you the board if that is needed. Location: Hungary

blo,

Yes, it sounds like you have this issue. Can you please try 185.18.14; it should fail with different debug information from VDPAU; please post those here too. The two sets of error messages together will allow us to be certain.

Also, please double-check with the latest 190.* driver, just to make sure there isn't some other issue.

blo, Can you please re-run the 185.18.14 MPlayer tests and use "-vc ffh264vdpau" instead of "-vc ffh264". The error messages I'm looking for would only show up when a VDPAU decoder object is created (which vdpinfo doesn't do, so those tests aren't conclusive, and MPlayer only does when using HW decoding, not when using SW decoding, as your logs did).

P.S. The "fatal error" that MPlayer sees during startup in 185.18.14 has been worked around in the latest 190.* drivers. The root-cause is an MPlayer bug. I don't recall whether this just prevents the driver from triggering a fatal error, or whether this change also prevents the MPlayer segfault. You may be able to avoid this by testing with a smaller video file, and/or not using fullscreen mode for this test.

Thanks.
