Default PhysX might be ported to OpenCL (i.e PhysX on ATI)

Bit-tech writes (I saw the news on Sweclockers.com)
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardwar...sx-to-opencl/1

Quote:
“Nvidia works very closely with The Khronos Group,” said Mohammad, explaining that “actually Neil Trevett is president of the group and he’s part of Nvidia - so we’ve been driving that standard also, and it’s an excellent standard.” What’s more, later on, Mohammad also described Nvidia’s future plans for PhysX by saying “as and when we do move to OpenCL,” which implies little doubt that Nvidia is seriously considering this as an option.

good, if physx starts working on ati cards as well, so much better for nvidia.

And AMD. Our resident nVidia-PR-spokesperson keeps touting of the GeForce superior featureset. This would give him one less reason to slober nVidia's knob.

I'd agree it would be a good thing. Get one standard that can work across the board so developers will want to use it.

yes, good for amd as well, what i was trying to say physx doesn't have good chance of surviving if it stays on nvidia cards only. it should have worked on both brands of card from start.

Nvidia has been trying to encourage support for physx on ati cards. ^^ I recall a user was building a driverset that would support physx on ati cards and nvidia was actually giving him email support assistance.

Physx is far more then just another bulletpoint on nvidias video card box's, its a while new product that they are trying to synergize with their video cards. They are banking on the hope that with more video card support, more game makers will likely support the physx protocal, and that while ati cards will support it, nvidia will be there with the better driver support, performance, ect. Also with the added game support, game makers will be getting nvidias logo.

A little risky but imo, about damn time. We need to get this shiat standardized.

In the long run we will probably see Havok + PhysX acceleration on both ATI and NVidia, but probably a bit better performance with their individually supported physics api (i.e. ATI slightly faster with Havok, and NVidia slightly faster with PhysX).

considering no ones doing havok hardware accell, I can't see that happening.

thats a whole lotta speculation of may and may nots there. It seems AMD expressed interest, with no official release.
