I have the VIA KT133/VIA 686B chipset. with the KT7-RAID BIOS A9 (latest with some nvidia fix for GeForce 4 in XP, the FX 5200 works fine in XP...) No matter what kernel/AGPGARTorNVAGP/X86Config settings I use (the 15 or so combinations I've tried at least) the screen goes to the NVidia screen and stops, no distortion, can still ssh into the box, and the screen is at the proper video settings (ie. the refresh rate is right). I read that AGPGART has some troubles with the KT133 so I kicked it out of the kernel, but apparently the NVAGP has some problems too, or maybe it's the drivers, or maybe its the kernel, or maybe it's the X86Config, or maybe its al Queda, I don't know.

Default try slowing down your bios settings

I had almost exactly the same issues with a PNY geForce 5200 (not ultra) in a Soyo Dragon KT333/Ultra motherboard:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&postid=132393

The ONLY thing that helped me at all was going into bios and setting things to "failsafe defaults" (a.k.a. "slow"). I was able to change settings back one at a time and get back to reasonably optimized settings without causing constant lockups.

I actually thought I'd completely fixed the problem, but some games still cause lockups -- notably tux-racer and cgoban2. I can definitely live without tux-racer or other GL games, but I play go (a boardgame) regularly. It really surprised me to discover that cgoban (a java app) also triggered the lockups.

I eventually punted back to an old voodoo3 graphic card I had available. Kills me having the new card just sitting gathering dust.

Good luck. (Sure wish I had twinview back :-(

Thanks for your suggestions I will give them a whirly gig and see what comes of it, btw I noticed in one of your posts you mentions some arguments you passed to your kerne, could you post what those were?

Quote:
I selected the "failsafe defaults" option in the bios settings screen, got rid of all of my kernel arguments ("noapic", pci="noacpi", etc.) and set my XF86Config back to its defaults (NvAGP=3, etc.). No more lockups -- hooray!
Maybe too if I could get your kernel config so I can mess with that too, unless it's the one posted in your thread then I'll grab that one.

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, -but- failsafe setting produced the same results, ie, a nice white screen with a pretty nvidia logo. This is a great driver, it makes my card work but at the cost of me using my pc. I also tried:
Option "AlQueada" "0"
and that didn't help either so I've narrowed it down a bit I think.

At least the logo works, I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have the logo...

Perhaps I have a solution of the problem?!

I think you have forgotten to comment or remove
the:

Module "GLcore" in your XF86Config-4

i think this it is ;-)

Good luck ;-)

Hey,

Thanks, I've now tried that too. No work.

This has been a great learning experience. Its a new card maybe it will get fixed, maybe. In the meantime I will continue to try the 2^13 combinations of kernels, XFConfig's and "Option" deally'os, once those are exhausted I will blame the drivers. Then new ones will come out and I can start all over again, btw, I recommend recompiling your kernel, my PC runs noticable faster since I customized it, the video still doesn't work (except for the "nv" module), but the system seems happier.

Same bat time, same bat channel,

This may help some people, it confirmed things don't work for me... Gentoo linux has a iso image for playing Enemy Territory from CD, they include on it the newest 4363 nvidia drivers and a matching XFConfig and all. The drivers and config are automatically generated. Presumably they tested this on some systems and it worked, so if you are having some troubles give it a try, If it works well, look at their XFConfig and settings and apply them to your system, if not you have a nice coaster, frisbee, Christmas ornament, etc.

Did the ET CD work for you, or not?

If so, then you might be running into something unrelated to the drivers (it's something I ran into last night). If your X log gets to "mouse enabled on /dev/mouse" or whatever the message is (it mentions /dev/mouse or /dev/input/mice or /dev/psaux whatever you set your mouse device file to in the config), and then X freezes, and you're also using a USB mouse, then it *might* be something with the USB modules.

I had my system set up so that loading one USB module automatically loaded another, this used to be required. Apparently with the new release of *something*, the second module automatically loads the first. Which tries to load the second, which loads the first. Around and around... anyway, if this sounds like it might apply, attach the log.txt file you get from modprobe -c >log.txt.

The ET cd did not work, it gave me some errors about something... I should write them down here... I will later, first I ned to get a working OS back on my pc, I was trying suse 8.2 which comes with some nvidia drivers (old ones I guess) They were equally unhappy about life on my system. so... I will get my os back inorder and post the modprobe -c>log.txt results.

Thanks!

I did two modprobe -c. One with the normal vidoe stuff (AGPGART et all) and the other with a minimal boot, though I don't think it mattered, they should be the same right? Anyway, I am not sure what you are looking for but here they are. They are from the SuSE 8.2 install I have right now, I'm gonna keep it a while cuz it took 6 hours to install, no distro CD's have to FTP install, crazy Germans. Thanks for your help with all this.

On another note, I threw the card (geForceFX 5200 Ultra) and ET CD into a different computer with an Intel chipset and the same thing happened, spash screen and no X. This really really really makes me think that the problem is not the card, not the chipset, not the XFConfig, not the kernel, but the driver. The other card I have (geforce 2 MX) -does- work with the Enemy Territory CD. This newer card must not be implemented correctly in the driver, or there are some other hidden settings that need to be set. Comments, opinions? Am I giving up too easily? Has anyone out there had a trouble free life with linux and the 5200 Ultra (note the Ultra, not the 5200, I've seen posts that the 5200 works, just not the 5200 -Ultra-)? Please tell me I am being obtuse.

Until next time,

-Travis
