Default 1.0-4363 and 2.5.70: lockup when starting

Linux 2.5.70, NVIDIA 1.0-4363 with patch from www.minion.de
using GeForce SDR

When using the NVIDIA driver, the screen is filled with garbage characters (no graphics at all) and locks up completely, the PC has to be powercycled.

The 2.5.69 kernel worked fine. This may be a kernel issue, but it seem to be triggered by the nvidia kernel module. However, it is OK to modprobe the nvidia module (you get the messages seen below though).

XFree log indicates that the startup was successful. The last message in XFree86 log about AGP 2X can be changed to 1x (see NVreg_ReqAGPRate in NVIDIA README), but the screen still locks up.

Any hints?

Gerhard

Default Problem solved

I got help from Christian Zander, the maintainer of the NVIDIA patch. There seem to be some problem with AGPGART in 2.5.70. NVGART worked for me, eventhough I got a message indicating otherwise:
0: NVRM: not using NVAGP, AGPGART is loaded!!

In XF86Config-4:
Option "NvAgp" "1"

Hello,

Could I get your .config from the /usr/src/linux? I've tried building my own kernel but mucked something up. I know enough to get it to build for my system, but I still can't get the video stuff working. If you can't post that file, (btw, I just want to look at it for comparisons sake, not actually use it) since you've sucessfully built and used the nvidia drivers on 2.5.70 perhaps I could learn a few things from your kernel config.

Thanks,

Travis

quelx: Config included. I also had a few problems compiling the first time, but used "make defconfig" and modified the setup to get my config. www.kernelnewbies.com has useful information as well. Note for instance that you will need userlevel tools as well to be able to load modules.

There is a problem with 440BX and AGPGART in Christian Zander also sent me a patch for 2.5.70, works fine.

Gerhard

PS
My DSL modem broke just after I got the patch.
