I'm sorry if this is a repeat thread, but I can't get Search to work on my copy of Firefox.
I'm running Linux 64 bit, Ubuntu 8.10. I have a GeForce 9600GT and it was working great with the NVIDIA AMD version 177.82 driver. I downloaded and installed the version 180.44 driver and it will not initialize properly. It seems to be starting the 177.82 driver and loading 180.44 x server, I think. I get this error message in the system log. "API mismatch: The client module has the version 180.44, but this kernel module has the version 177.82. Please make sure this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver coponents have the same version." My display works in low resolution mode only. I am very new to Linux and need help. I can send message files if it helps. I tried to attach my Nvidia-bug-report.log file, but it seems to be too large. Thanks, Greg |

It seems the installation of 180.44 didn't finish properly. Try re-installing and watch for error messages. Make sure you have the kernel headers or sources for your kernel installed.
To attach the log file, you can (g)zip it first. |

ledoc,
Thanks for the information. I already have tried reinstalling the driver. I gzip-ed the file and attached it. I'm sure your correct that the installation did not finish. I don't know what you mean by "kernel headers or sources for your kernel installed". Thanks, Greg |

Ubuntu restricted drivers packages have a bad habit of leaving behind old kernel modules which X will then happily load when it starts. Uninstall the 180.44 driver and any nvidia ubuntu packages. Once that's done search for any lingering copies of the nvidia.ko module. Once you find and delete it then you should be able to reinstall the 180.44 driver without issue.

Thanks for the help everyone.
I was able to uninstall the 180.44 version driver and it is working great with the old one. I have read in several places that there is no need for the Nvidia driver unless the monitor is to be used for 3D graphics or video games or anything that will use the graphics accelerator. I'm using it for photographs, so I have decided to leave it as is for now. Greg |
