compiling NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4180.tar.gz

Is anyone having problems compiling NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4180.tar.gz?

When I run "$ make install", I get many compile errors (syntax, parse errors, etc). I have downloaded the driver multiple times, and the same error occurs. I have booted into text mode to run the install. Does anybody have any ideas?
