Default X doesn't not launch if HDMI cable connected before computer turns on

Hi,

I'm trying to get X working with nvidia drivers but i get this error :
Code:
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error).
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:0:16:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
(EE) NVIDIA(0): additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
I can launch X with "vesa" driver, but not with "nvidia" nor "nv". My mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H with an embedded GeForce 7100/nForce 630i chipset. I'm running Gentoo Linux with latest kernel 2.6.23 and latest nvidia drivers. The bug-report is attached.

Please, can someon tell me what's going on ?

Regards,
Kal

In fact, it's not solved at all !

If I connect the HDMI cable before turning on my compouter, then i get this error :
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error).

BUT, if I start my computer without any hdmi cable connected and connect one when kernel starts, then it works!

My plasma is a Pioneer PDP-507XD and it doesn't support low resolution through HDMI : I can't see bios informations etc... I have to wait that X is launched.

Hope someone could help me because it's really anoying to remove and connect HDMI cable each time I turn on my computer.

So it works if you connect the HDMI cable after the system has completed its POST, but before the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver has been loaded?

Exactly. Well, I don't remember if it works too after nvidia driver is loaded, but i think it does.

Hmmm, I seem to be having a very similar problem. Originally, the machine wouldn't even POST with the HDMI lead inserted until I turned off the "Full Screen Logo" option in the BIOS. It was only through reading this post that I discovered the X failure issue was down to the HDMI lead insertion issue, too...

Hence I wonder if this is a BIOS issue..? What mother board are you using, _kal_? Mine's an ABit AN-M2HD board with built-in nVidia GeForce 7025.

I may try a BIOS update if I can...

My mainboard is a GA-73PVM-S2H. By the way, If I connect my computer to another plasma through HDMI, it works and I can even go to the bios.

My screen's a Panasonic PZ70, and I don't have access to another to try it. Certainly, mine won't display any of the BIOS stuff on the panel...

I've contacted the mobo manufacturer, but I'm not holding my breath!

Nothing useful back from the mobo manufacturer yet, but I have managed to find something out by examining the output from dmesg for booting with the HDMI cable in compared to booting with the cable out.

With the cable in (i.e. the cause of the problem), dmesg repeatedly reports:
Code:
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x31:0xffffffff:1004)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed
but when the cable is mometarily out, the kernel module loads successfully:
Code:
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 169.07 Thu Dec 13 18:34:01 PST 2007
Unfortunately, I'm no hardware guru but I believe this may have something to do with IRQs.

If you type:
Code:
dmesg | grep NVRM
do you get error messages similar to mine? Or is everything rosy..?

Do let me know if you get anywhere. Unplugging the HDMI lead is currently the fly in my 42" of ointment...

Hello _kal_!

I am having the exact same issue with a Panasonic PT-AX200E projector + XFX nForce-630i+GF7150 mobo.

I have not yet attempted a driver / bios update, but I get the exact same symptom. Found your thread googling on "NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x31:0xffffffff:1004)".

VGA works great though. but not DVI-D nor HDMI.

Keep me posted!

Best regards,

Mikael
