Default vdpau fails - 180.37 - MPlayer SVN-r28942-4.3.3

Hi,
I use the following command :
mplayer -v -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau -cache 2000 testfile.mkv &> mplayer.log

I run this same file and command on two computers with same nvidia driver (180.37) and
mplayer (r28942).

This works fine on my computer with a 9600GT 512MB connected to DVI 1680x1050.

It fails on my computer with a 9500GT 512MB connected to HDMI 1920x1080 with the the following messages that i think is relevant (full log attached) :
Code:
...
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_surface_create: An invalid handle value was provided.
...
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_surface_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_mixer_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_presentation_queue_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_presentation_queue_target_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_output_surface_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_output_surface_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_output_surface_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_device_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.
vo: uninit ...
In a similar thread here someone thought these errors may because of to little memory. My guess is it is related to HDMI output.

Good you attached the full log, because you cut the most relevant message:
[vdpau] Creating H264 hardware decoder for 4 reference frames.
[vdpau] Failed creating VDPAU decoder: The display was pre-empted, or a fatal error occurred.

So no, that is unlikely to be an out-of-memory issue, and you should create a log file with the VDPAU debug environment variables set as described in one of the stickies, because this is one for NVidia to look into IMO.

Yes, please follow the instructions in the sticky to generate a debug log and nvidia-bug-report.

When using sw decoder (-vo vdpau -vc ffh264) i get green picture.
All sw (-vo xv -vc ffh264) works fine.

There are a lot of "XID" messages in your syslog. These are the GPU indicating it had a problem interpreting commands sent to it. Some of these appear to be caused by the X server and some by VDPAU. I think the most likely cause is that your graphics card isn't seated correctly in its slot, or perhaps some system-level issue causing data to be corrupted as its transferred to the GPU. Can you try reseating the card, updating the BIOS. Is your system correctly cooled? If anything is overclocked, please revert that and retry.

Hope this helps...

Seems to a problem with the 9500GT card (Gainward 9500GT 512MB).
I swapped my 9600GT and 9500GT, the 9600GT works fine in the new comp and VDPAU fails in the same way with the 9500GT in my old comp.

Stephen, should i return my 9500GT and expect a replacement (same model) to function properly ? Or is it a risk that all 9500GTs have this problem ?

Has anyone else VDPAU problems with 9500GT ?

I tested both cards (9600GT and 9500GT) in Windows with MediaPlayerClassic HomeCinema and it definately looks like my 9500GT is broken.

MediaPlayerClassic plays the testfile.mkv (h264, 1280x720) in software mode when i have the 9500 installed, and it is played with acceleration with my 9600.
Playing a h264 1920x1080 file fails (no output at all) on my 9500 and is played with acceleration with my 9600.

The 9500 card (Gainward 9500GT 512MB) is marked with "PureVideo HD" so i guess it should support VDPAU.
Stephen can you confirm this ?

I'm certainly not aware of any bugs specific to the 9500GT. It should work just fine with VDPAU.

Any markings on the box are targeted at the Windows driver, so aren't authoritative for VDPAU, but again, this card should work.

I'm not sure exactly what the test results under Windows mean. Certainly, things that don't outright work potentially indicate a problem with the hardware (but not definitely). However, there may be many reasons for fallback to SW decoding (application/decoder SW specific, resource limitations, or indeed the problem you're seeing under Linux).

Thanks for your feedback.
I have returned my 9500GT and is waiting for a new.
I will post a reply here with info/result of my replacement 9500GT when it arrives.

I got my replacement Gainward 9500GT 512MB today and it shows the same problem.
I have contacted Gainward about this, lets see if they have some good explanation.
I have read a few other recent posts about 9500GT problems so it might be some a pattern to this problem.

Stephen, the store i bought it from was also unable to play h264 accelerated on the card i returned. Is there a chance that these 9500GT 512MB are using really old chips which do not support video acceleration ?

FYI, i ran vdpinfo on both my 9500gt and my 9600gt and the output is identical.

No, in that case the creation of the VdpDevice would have failed, not the VdpDecoder.

You mentioned having seen other problems with 9500GT? Can you post specific links. Thanks.
