I can *always* reproduce this:
1. Make sure you are running with "visual effects" enabled. (system->preferences->appearance->"visual effects"). 2. Start firefox. 3. Open new tab. Go to address bar. Type multiple characters. When the "awesome bar" tries to redraw. The video gets corrupted. Note that if I go and down before typing a second character , corruption won't happen. The problem is that with awesome bar enabled, and having many browsing history entries. I can't even type an address without getting my computer locked. System: I have a Asus P5N7A-VM (http://asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=8YiUFvK51IergAqY), running an up to date Jaunty. Intel Quad core with 8G RAM. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you debug this. [...] EDIT:removing the old attachment as it didn't contain any error messages. See my next post with the two attached logs. Here are some more meaningful log files. These were done with "startx -- -logverbose 6", and obtained through ssh when the machine locked.
There are two log files: one from when the system manages to recover (and don't think that this one had "verbose 6") and another from the system stayed locked. The kernel is an old one while running these as I was trying to see if the problem would persist with old kernels. |

Did you activate the Compiz »Force synchronization between X and GLX« workaround (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...4?comments=all for details)?

I wasn't aware of those fixes. Thanks a million for pointing me towards that case.
FWIW, Using "Compiz ConfigSettings Manager" -> Utility -> Workarounds To fix the issue, I had to enable both: "Fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx" "Force synchronization between X and GLX" [UPDATE]: I am still getting corruption of video updates, but now with these fixes in place, I don't need to reboot and can restore the system by just switching back and forth from the console.
