Question nvidia-glx problem

So, here's the deal.

I properly downloaded the kernel package from nvidia, installed it, and dpkg-reconfigured the xfree86 file. And X works! But, when i try to install the nvidia-glx*.deb packages, I get that I need xlibmesa5, and when i install -f, i download everything, and when I'm done, it dpkg tells me it wants to remove modutils, and if i do, my modules no longer work.

Do I need to install the glx package?
If so, how can I do this and keep my modules intact?

Is there an alternative here?

Thanks

Default ???

I'll admit, I don't understand, so if anyone wants to clear this up for me, props to them.

I went through the dselect command, installed 96M of stuff (didn't change anything though) of which xlibmesa3 and its affiliates were included. No dependancy problems there, modutils not removed.

So why, in apt-get, does modutils (amongst a couple of others) get removed when you apt-get install xlibmesa3, but when you dselect, no such thing occurs?

By the way, nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-dev were then installed, and everything works now.
