I have an EVGA Nvidia 9800 GTX+ running on a GA-P45T board. OS is Opensuse 11.1 (KDE 4.2). Nvidia drivers are installed from the package NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.44-pkg2.run.
There is no problem in runlevel 5. Fan control works - the video card is working silently and even under stress with 3D-applications and 3D-games there is no temperature problem. However, as soon as I quit runlevel 5 and change to the non-graphical runlevel 3 (init 3) the fan of the video card works permanently at 100 % (noisy). Are the fan control parts of the driver not initialized in run level 3 ? (The nvidia module is loaded, but does not seem to be used). How can I influence the fan speed in runlevel 3 ? Is there a possibility to permanently reduce fan speed in runlevels 1,2,3 ? Without destroying the automatic fan control for runlevel 5 ? Last edited by moenchmeyer; 04-17-09 at 04:39 AM. Reason: changing the Card Version from GTX to GTX+ |

NVIDIA driver provides no fan support except that it sets fan speed statically to 31.1% so You can expect damage of Your hardware soon.
