Default PowerMizer causing VDPAU problems

Hi.

Since 185.19 is the first release that's not freezing on me, I experimented with VDPAU and a recent mplayer-svn. So far, the results are impressing except for one thing: As soon as I try to playback videos which are > 720p in h264 I get a really jumpy playback and mplayer reports that my system might be too slow. Since I own a 9800 GTX+ (which is enough), I did some more digging around and figured the following:

When I playback h264 >720p, my card stays at its lowest performance level which is simply not enough. If I do a VT switch cycle before I start mplayer, the card is already at its high settings (well there are only two) when mplayer fires up and viola, everything works fine apart from the judder caused by displaying 50 Hz material on a 60 Hz display. The performance level didn't drop until after I stopped mplayer. That's 100% reproduceable btw.

For what it's worth, I have attached an nvidia-bugreport along with the usual mplayer trace I made, when the performance level was at its lowest setting.

Hope that helps. If there is anything else I can do, let me know.

Thanks a lot,
matthew.

Thanks for the bug report and complete information. I've filed a bug; we'll attempt to repro and fix.

I have the same problem with an 8600m GT. Videos are incredibly jerky until I fire up GLXGears or some other little 3D application to get the GPU into full performance mode. After it gets there, though, it stays there until I quit playing the video.

I've reproduced this bug on a card with G92. I've filed a bug. I'll provide any status updates here.

This should be fixed in the 185.18.14 driver

Hi and thanks for the hint.

Unfortunately 185.18.14 is everything but working/stable, so at least in my case, I have to skip this release and test this with the next one.

Best regards,
matthias.

If there are specific issues with 185.18.14, please take the time to report them in a new thread; we can't fix them if we don't know about them. Thanks.

Hi.

Already did a few hours ago: see post.

Some one else reported the supposedly same problem later with more information: see here.

Best regards,
matthias.

Works fine here without any problem. No more lagging at the start of the video. I am using 185.18.14 + 2.6.29 kernel with 8600M GT.

Okay, maybe I spoke too soon, just got my very first system hanging with Linux, i'm not sure if it is caused by nvidia driver or not but it is likely so.

I don't know if this is related, but I was getting consistently jumpy video for even modest videos using mplayer with vdpau compiled in, with these specs:

Videos generally 720p, H264

x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+ AuthenticAMD

PNY Nvidia 9800 GT

Prior Driver with jumpiness (Gentoo): x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.60:0

With vdpau enabled (-vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau), motherboard CPU utilization was in the 1% to 2% range.

Now, I compiled nvidia-drivers-185.18.14 using <http://gpo.zugaina.org/AJAX/Ebuild/94138>, and with no other change (same mplayer, etc., after taking down X processes, rmmod'ing nvidia module, modprobe'ing the new module, restarting X, then using the identical mplayer command), things are looking really, really good: the jumpiness, so far, is gone. I look forward to confirming, partially confirming, or denying, when I get to some more action oriented scenes. I also witnessed artifact lines in some movie, but I don't know if that was encoding, so I'm still not claiming that one. Jumpiness was consistent until the new driver, though. Looking good after only a few minutes ... here's hoping that's symptoms of a more in depth fix.

The PowerMizer issue is possibly totally unrelated to my story, but who knows. Sorry to intercede.
