It looks like ATI has made significant improvements concerning issues with tearing:

It says that it requires more graphics memory, but that is a price worth paying I guess.

What about Nvidia?
Will this finally be fixed with the new Xserver and compiz 0.9x?

I suggest reading the entire thread post by post (comments and discussion) to understand how amd "fixed" tearing at this point Amd's linux drivers did have tearing from the start, fixed it at some point, and reintreduced it some time ago.. So this is the second time tearing is being "fixed" by amd on linux .. So I suggest staying away from amd on linux at all costs
