vbetool alternative (Don't wake on mouse movement)

Typically I use vbetool to turn off my monitors when I'm away from my computer. I prefer it this way. I've been doing this for the last couple of years or so. I shortcut a script in KDE to a key and the script handles running vbetool dpms off/on when it's appropriate.

It has come to my attention in the last few minutes of searching this forum that there is a long standing relationship with vbetool and the nvidia driver. I understand that it hasn't always worked and I really don't expect it to work.

Since I can't depend on the nvidia driver to be compatible with vbetool, I'm left with using xset which seems to be functioning as expected.

The difference between the two applications is that when turning off my monitors, X is the one doing it when using xset, and thus will turn them back on if the mouse moves for any reason. This is not what I would like to happen. When using vbetool dpms off moving the mouse does nothing because X thinks the montior is still on.

I've looked for a way to disable the mouse, or set the screen saver to ignore the mouse, but I haven't found a way to do it.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to accomplish this in X?
