Hi!
I experience some more or less severe x crashes with recent nvidia driver versions. The screen looks like it's content got shuffled and put somewhere random (screenshot attached). The system stays responsive in the way that I can login remotely and I'm even able to run some graphical applications. However, eventually x gets restarted after a certain time (between a few seconds and a few minutes). Though I am able to start graphical applications, their representation is also garbled and spread across various parts of the screen. I had two such crashes with 180.44, where the system hang completely after some time, and two with 180.51, where only x restarted itself. This crash happened in both heavy load and almost no load situations, the two 180.44 crashes happened right after each other, whereas the two 180.51 crashes appeared after several hours of uptime. Edit: Forgot to mention, the last known working driver for me is 180.29 |

After a bit more time comparing 180.29 and newer drivers (180.60 especially) I think both have the same issue, just with different consequences.
180.29 would sometimes hang as well, blocking all input and screen updates. However, at some point kwin would report Compositing being very slow and eventually disabling it. One can then reenable it and everything continues to work as normal. With newer drivers (180.44, 180.51, 180.60) instead of just hanging those screen-corruptions appear, and kwin doesn't report slow compositing either. (I think there was a fix for the hangs of 180.29 later, maybe that's the culprit?) I have not tried disabling compositing by hand (with kwin's shortcut) in such a situation, but will as soon as I experience such a crash again (it will come eventually *sigh*) I hope this provides you some more insight into my problem so you can fix it as soon as possible. |

Just a report from a happy user. While this is still an issue for me on the latest 185.x driver, it is no longer with the latest 190.x beta driver. I still have occasional freezes once in a while (usually triggered by scrolling in either konqueror or kate), but way less severe than before and so far without crashes (knock on wood).
Keep it up! I'm pretty sure those issues will disappear evantually as well ![]() |
