I never liked competitive multiplayer, I played it quite a lot in Unreal Tournament, a bit later I played Battlefiled 1942 too. But after it, I lose interest and now I only play coop. I love playing coop with my friends, we play Left 4 Dead quite often and we all have bought the incoming Killing Floor. We know each other for years, and we don't meet as often as we would like (distance, work...), but it's great to spend 4 or 5 (or more) hours killing zombies once a week, it keeps us in touch

You do realize even the hardest AI modes cannot be compared with human skill? I've beaten Quake3Arena on Nightmare and yet had trouble competing against some mediocre skiled players in MP. Just saying.

The point is the assumption that all singlplayer-only gamers are worried about their "skillz" is silly.

I've not completed a singleplayer game in 17 years of gaming, not one, nada.
I only use the singleplayer aspect to get used to the game prior to diving into MP. I hate singleplayer.

This. And I even haven't started Left 4 Dead yet. Waiting on the wings are COD4 and Crysis Wars, which I think I will never play lol.
There's still GTA4 MP, Empire Total War MP etc. MP RULEZ

I like both MP and SP.
From whats been said already I also think some people like SP because the eventual outcome is always a WIN. You may die here and there have to save a lot but in the end, YAY I WON.And there are others who hate MP cause their pirates and never get to experience the MP part of a game, they would rather bash MP then admit their pirates and never play MP.

A lot of guys are weighing in on FPS for their comparison of single player and multiplayer experiences and I have to agree with what’s been said so far.
Over all I depends upon the design goal of the game. Some are meant to be played single player to present some sort of story. While I can appreciate the effort and artistic value the game value to me is “replayability”. BUT it depends on the game. Bioshock comes to mind. Fantastic single player game but do you really see it being a MP game? I don’t. Moving forward here is a different perspective. I play for the most part the MP portion of IL2 1946. The single player aspect of the game while okay is lacking. The AI doesn’t really compare to flying against a real opponent. While it may be challenging for beginners 1 v 1 fights are a bore. They just don’t do the right things. In fact some have to pile on multiple opponents just to get a challenge. Quickly you could just say the AI sucks. The reality is that is okay not super great but in the area of BFM and ACM there just hasn’t been game to date that people can’t overcome. I’m sure as we step into the world of multithreaded apps and multiple CPUs/GPS we might see a jump in AI but overall it’s just not there. One of the types of games I play frequently involves over a 100 people on a server with one life to live. Let me tell you that there is nothing that gets your blood pumping in an all out knife fight in a phone box with a bad guy. Playing the AI is lacking to say the least. So for me it’s all about MP in this type of game. |
