Default Kubuntu Intrepid TVout - Black Screen on Separate X Window - Twinview Works

Hello forum members,

I need help getting TV out working in Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid with KDE 4.x and using the latest Nvidia display driver 180.29 (downloaded from their web site) and the GeForce 7600GT graphics card.

Twinview mode works great but when I use the separate X window mode, all I get is a black screen. While the screen is black, I have a mouse cursor but the cursor is in the shape of an x instead of a mouse pointer. I also get a quick glimpse of the Nvidia logo right before the black screen appears.

Everything shows up fine in my computer monitor.

I performed a full system upgrade to see if it is a bug that had been fixed but it did not help. I am now using kernel 2.6.27.11 after the upgrade.

I could not post my xorg.conf and X log because they reached the maximum word limit but I will gladly post them once I can figure out how.

Can anybody help me resolve this?

Sincerely,
Roy

UPDATE --

I gave up and went to Kubuntu Hardy 8.04.2 where the problem does not exist. I think the problem with the Kubuntu Intrepid might have something to do with Xorg not being compatible with older Nvidia cards as stated in the release notes:

Quote:
The 71 and 96 series of proprietary nVidia drivers, as provided by the nvidia-glx-legacy and nvidia-glx packages in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, are not compatible with the X.Org included in Ubuntu 8.10. Users with the nVidia TNT, TNT2, TNT Ultra, GeForce, GeForce2, GeForce3, and GeForce4 chipsets are affected and will be transitioned on upgrade to the free nv driver instead. This driver does not support 3D acceleration.

Users of other nVidia chipsets that are supported by the 173 or 177 driver series will be transitioned to the nvidia-glx-173 or nvidia-glx-177 package instead. However, unlike drivers 96 and 71, drivers 173 and 177 are only compatible with CPUs that support SSE (e.g. Intel Pentium III, AMD Athlon XP or higher). Systems with older CPUs will also be transitioned to the nv driver on upgrade.
Cheers,
Roy

'm back again.

I resurrected this thread to say that the above problem persists with Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 as well. This is with an upgraded xorg.

Below is a copy of my xorg.conf file.

Can anybody help me?

This sounds like a known design limitation in KDE 4, which doesn't support multiple X screens. I don't know why it would have worked for you in Hardy, unless you also went back to KDE 3. The code is just plain missing from KDE 4.

Thank you for the reply and for the explanation. You are correct in assuming I was using KDE 3 in Hardy.

Perhaps future releases of KDE 4 will include the code for multiple X screen support?

All the best,
Roy
