Default Will a 64-bit Vista key work for 32-bit?

My friend got a lap top for his birthday and it came with Vista 64 bit, but now he is trying to install some drivers that are 32 bit only. And I told him that he should return it and get one that has 32 bit built in, but he didn't listen to me. Now he does.

So i'm wondering, if he does a full system re-install (I have Home Premium 32 bit DVD, but I don't want to share my key) with my dvd, can he type in his 64 bit key, and it will work? Or does he have to return it or buy new Vista?

As far as I know the x86 and x64 have different keys. Cant use an x86 key with an x64 install disc.

I know for retail they do share the same key. For OEM however, this might be different. Worth a shot anyway IMHO.

Yes the key is the same, you may install either version, or even both at the same time on one machine with care. OEM versions ship with one DVD, some retail versions ship with both, otherwise you will need to download the alternate format.

Greg is right, it will work. Retail or oem makes no difference

well, he bought his 64-bit pre built. Would that pre built key work with a retail DVD that is 32-bit??

Should work, I used my OEM Vista 32 Home Prem Key to install Vista 64... so I would guess it works the other way around.

This is incorrect. I used my x86 key with a friend's x64 disc and it worked perfectly fine.
