I am looking to buying 2 new hard drives for Raid. What is the best out there at a reasonable price? I've seen Caviar Black, Caviar SE16 and Seagate Baracuda 7200.12.
What do you guys think?

IMO I think the Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB Hard Drives with 32mb of cache is very good .they have good read and write speeds.I have two of them in a Raid-0 set-up and have not had any problems.I hear the new Seagate 7200.12 with it 500gig platters is supposed to be good. But IMO any of the Western Digital Caviar Black would be a good choice.

$60 buys you the FASTEST 7200 RPM drive on the market, and in fact the Seagate Beracuda 500GB 7200.12 actually has a FASTER sustained read than BOTH the RaptorX and VelociRaptor.
I own one for my OS drive and it's not only totally silent, but only half the thickness of a standard drive. My Raptor which is my FSX drive annoys the **** out of me. Too damn loud. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148377 Seagate 7200.12 = 108MB/s average read. ![]() RaptorX 10,000 = 72MB/s average read ![]() VelociRaptor 10,000 = 103MBs/s average read ![]()

Just ordered 2 Western Digitals Caviar SE16 640gbs. Based on reviews, it's the better buy(pricing/performance) out of the Barracudas and Caviar Blacks.

For RAID they recommend ONLY the enterprise line of their HDD's. PS: I have 2 of the 1TB Cavair blacks (not raid).

I have 2 WD1001FALS in a software (md) RAID5 along with a ST31000340AS. Unlike the Seagate drives (started with 2), the WD's have been rock solid. A third Black arrived today and I'll be using it for backups. When I'm ready to rotate my backups after 6 months, I'll pick up a fourth.
3ware usually recommends enterprise grade drives, like the RE3 from WD and the ES.2 from Seagate. They've got a drive compatibility list up, but last I looked the WD1001FALS wasn't on it. I came across a message board post a few months ago that had 8*WD1001FALS working fine on a 3ware 9650SE-8LP. |
