Default Ubuntu 9.04 Nvidia GForce 6500 card recognizes lcd as crt

I have an Acer AL1916 LCD monitor which only has analog intput from the computer. I have a GForce 6500 video card and am using the Nvideo recommended Ubuntu driver. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. This monitor is recognized as a crt monitor instead of an lcd and none of the resolution choices match the 1280 x 1024 I should have. The display doesn't look very good. I've spent a lot of the day trying to find a fix on line, but didn't find anything yet. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
