Could this infinite loop be related to the problem I am having with the 4x.xx drivers in certain games? (see other thread)

Probably. It's such a sporatic event that's usually based on which drivers you have installed in your system. I've suffered from it on rare occasions and it's always been solved by either updating or reverting my drivers.
