Exclamation Can't boot into windows help!!!

ok here's what happened:

i have 2 partitions C and D and i used to dual boot
C had windows XP on it
D has windows Vista on it

i went into command prompt and formatted C so that I could delete the partition and just keep vista

after reboot i kept getting a "bootmgr is missing" error

i tried recovery console with the startup recovery but no luck
i tried bcdedit and bootrec commands from the recovery console but again no luck

"I fixed the part below by setting C to active using diskpart but still getting bootmgr error"
i used diskpart from recovery console and deleted partition c
now i dont even get the error, the computer boots straight from the dvd
i can still see the contents of c (empty) and d (vista stuff) if i do "dir d:" in the recovery console

i just want to boot back into vista... what can i do?? help guys PLEASE!!

you could try this

boot from your vista cd and choose the 'Command Prompt' option, after entering
System Recovery.

bootrec /? should give u options like

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Re-install xp or on a small drive and add Vista in the boot options if all else fails

Then go from there.

That will probably work though.

Did you install Vista on top of XP? Bad idea if so

I keep them on two separate drives and switch in bios.

.
Same here. As often as I add and remove drives and OSes it's just so much easier.

yah same here. best solution ever because they never touch each other so therefore there can't be any problems of which os is default or has the bootmgr or all that stuff.

This should work. Had the same problem a month ago and these fixed it. /fixmbr and /fixboot were the two that I needed.

tried all of those commands but still same bootmgr is missing error... i guess i am doomed now ... i had xp and vista on the same physical drive but separate partitions... i guess my only option is to install another vista on C and see if i can somehow boot the vista on D

Did you try /rebuildbcd?

I think you need that one.

yup that one didnt work either.... i managed to install vista on the C partition and it automatically added the old vista to the boot manager... so now im back to the old vista but explorer.exe seems to be broken... it starts up but theres no background or any taskbar... manually starts explorer works for a few seconds then crashes... everything else seems to work fine like movies and internet... sigh im really hating this
