Default How much harddrive space do I leave free?

How much harddrive space should I leave free for my 1TB storage drives.

I got a few drives full already and 2 more 1TB drives on the way. I finaly got some CPUs and memory for my two 1U servers and gona load all my drives in them and run a private FTP for friends. So they are for storage but will be read quite a bit.

What should be safe? I dont have the money to setup a Raid 5 at the moment, so all my drives are solo.

Its all Anime anyways so if I loose it I have a list of everything I have and can download it back quick (fios 20/20)

Ive been trying to leave about 100GB free on each drive.

Is there any real reason to leave a bunch of empty space on them? I don't really see the point. I'd fill 'em up to 95% full.

Not sure thats why im asking. But I read allot of " Save X% space keeps the drive alive longer" Reason being I guess the heads dont have to move as much. I donno.

The main reason is not drive length but performance, you will find that the more you fill it you the slower the drive gets as the head needs to move backwards and forwards this increases latency and makes the drive less responceive. The only drive thats not effected is SSD.
