Default 9400 GT PCI-e fails to load driver 2.6.29 kernel

Hi,

Now with nvidia-bug-report.log...see next post for attachment.

System is:

Debian Sid x86_64:

Kernel 26.29-4.slh.4-sidux-amd64
X.Org 1.4.2 Nvidia driver 180.60 installed using Sidux script
AMD OpteronX2/nforce4 2 GB RAM

Asus Nvidia 9400 GT PCI-e
Can someone see what is going on here, and give some pointers to possible workarounds?

Thanks!

Does this problem reproduce with the 185.18.14 NVIDIA Linux graphics driver pre-release (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?p=2016740)?

certainly reproduced with a 185 pre-release from early last week. I haven't yet tried with the new 185 stable release.

I suspect a mismatch with some Sidux kernel settings as the 180 driver works with both the Mythbuntu 09.04 and the Sabayon 4.0 live CD kernels. I'm just compiling a 2.6.29 kernel based on the Mythbuntu 2.6.28 config, so will know more tomorrow. My money is on the new sparse irq setting for the moment.

Problem still exists using NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14
rebuilt kernel 2.6.29 using config from Mythbuntu 09.04 (attached) and ran nvidia installer direct from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run script.

OK. Please apply the patch below to 185.18.14, attempt to load the NVIDIA kernel module and attach the resulting output.
# sh /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg0.run --apply-patch NVIDIA_kernel-185.18.14.561301.diff.txt
# sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg0-custom.run

Thanks Zander.

Looks like thios will just give more debugging info?

Yes. More specifically, it will give me data that should confirm the theory that the kernel has a different idea about the BAR allocations than the GPU does. There have been a few other reports of similar problems with Linux 2.6.29.

Here is the output after running the patched installer on the new kernel 2.6.30 (default sidux config)nvidia-bug-report.log.gz

config-2.6.30-0.slh.1-sidux-amd64.gz

OK, thanks. I'm not sure off-hand where the bogus physical address ioremap() complains about is from, but the fundamental problem appears to be another mismatch between the GPU's PCI configuration space and the kernel's software state:

The GPU's second 64-bit BAR is mapped @ 0xce000000 (see the PCI configuration space dump above, specifically [0x1c - 0x23]), but the kernel seems to disagree.

Thanks very much Zander. Hopefully this will help the Sidux devs point to where the problem is in the kernel code. Can you think of any temporary workarounds?

Cheers!
