Couple that with a good cheap 760G micro-atx board:

A low wattage Athlon X2 5050e 2.6Ghz CPU:

A solid and efficient power supply is a must, and 400W should be more than enough power:

4Gb of memory to ensure smooth operation when dealing with huge video files:

A cheap case with plenty of 3.5" hard drive bays:

Then just fill it with reliable high capacity hard drives and a DVD drive to install the OS.

Should be good for just about anything.

just remember that is one of the cheapest complete kits, there are better ones out there, if you willing to spend more cash

Thanks, yeah I know I didn't include cameras there I'm still looking for the best/cheapest camera. And thanks for the links.. very helpful. Now I have a basic idea from where to start. Somebody was saying on a surveillance forum that you'll have problems with dvr pci boards. The software is always buggy and most don't work well with amd stuff They said you're better off just buying a real dvr cctv system. I'll do the price matching.

Thanks again

PCI-E based card will be better(compared to PCI), and two seperate HDD would a good idea, one for OS and one just for video recording.
