Default Vista does not turn off computer

Hi there,

I have a desktop machine, built from components and I wonder, whether my issue is related to the nVidia card or driver.

Whenever I shut down the machine, it does not turn off, instead it reboots... I also have Linux on the same machine, Linux actually does turn off the machine, this tells me the issue is Vista related.

When I googled, some other folks had the same problem and could boil it down to driver issues, but they had ATi stuff.

What do you think, can that turn off issue be related to my nVidia card?

Here some data about my system:

K7S5A Pro board, latest Bios, ACPI enabled
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
GForce 6200 from Asus, AGP4x

Vista Home Premium SP2 32Bit

Nvidia driver 32Bit latest version, 186.18

Had this issue recently with one of my machines. Nothing a format couldn't fix. Just one of those things that happens to a Vista install after awhile.

Does it completely reboot or go black then bring up the logon screen after a short time?
If this is what happens, something is keeping it awake. Media sharing is the usual suspect here.

you again and your anti-vista campaign, for your info same thing can happen to xp and win7.

pinguin74, in eventviewer, microsoft, windows, Diagnostics-Performance, look for entries like this.

Quote:
This service caused a delay in the system shutdown process:
File Name : FontCache3.0.0.0
Friendly Name : PresentationFontCache.exe
Version : 3.0.6920.4000 built by: QFE
Total Time : 3361ms
Degradation Time : 3418ms
Incident Time (UTC) : 6/17/2009 7:52:12

This is most of the time caused when some app/driver/service holds onto a part of registry and doesn't want to let go.

XP was suffering heavily from this, then MS released User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Vista/Win7 has that service by default it is named "User Profile Service" make sure it runs.

Nope, never happened in XP (in the years I've used it) or Windows 7. Happened in Vista twice to me now though (within the last year).

Windows 7 will be going on every machine I have as soon as it RTMs. Can't f'n wait!

Just because it never happened to you doesn't mean it can't happen.

By your logic, since I've never had this problem on any machine ever, the problem must not exist and this thread is a lie.

don't mind him, he is a anti-vista troll. MS was bored, so they just released a critical service to fix something that never happens, just for the hell of it.

Your theory and your logic is sound nekro, this problem happened to me with xp on more than one machine and have had the same problem with some of my users machine.

Just ignore the troll, they tend to shrivell up and die when starved.

You might try updating your BIOS, has worked for me.

Thanx, yes that may seem to be likely. Where can I find this service? With msconfig? I have to look for a similar sounding service, cause I donīt run English speaking Windows Vista.

well english name is User Profile Service. and it can be found in Computer Managemet under services. Windows name is ProfSvc, that name is same for all languges.

This service is responsible for User Hive(registry) cleanup, all NT based windows suffer from this. Service was added to 2000, 2003, XP with a patch, service is native in Vista and Win7. Some users disable needed services by mistake and or services sometimes might stop working by themself (less likelly)

If they released a fix for it... why does it still happen?
