Default 250GTS fan speed stuck at 100%

Has anyone been able to control the fan speed of the 250GTS? The thing keeps spinning as if it wants to get off this planet.
I have installed the latest official driver. From nvidia-settings, I can downclock but I have no control whatsoever over fan speed. The default nvclock included with Ubuntu 9.04 does not recognize the card, and the latest one (fetched directly from CVS) informs me that

This is just madness. I have returned to the old computer for anything that does not require the 250GTS because the noise is driving me completely nuts.

It seems like you have to use NiBiTor and add performance profiles to your video card BIOS.

However, the first thing I would have tried is to change the GPU - as no one else has this problem.

are you sure its not the gpu fan its self?

Well i had the same problem when i got me a Point of view 250gts with custom copper heat spreader fan and it turned out it had a 2 pin connector (no fan control)... i returned it next day and got me one with normal fan, this one has 3 pins though on my old 8800gts i had 4 pins which made total control of it, but ok 3 is still good.

Interesting remarks. It is an ASUS DK EN250GTS 512MB. I see one reviewer on Newegg complains that this is not a real 250 at all. ASUS appears to have decided to stick a new label on their stock of 9800GTX+ GPUs. Which, apparently, means you get a card that has the size and the power needs of the 9800GTX+ and two 6-pin connectors rather than one. Their 1GB version appears to be the real deal, though. I guess I'll try and get a replacement.
