Default Fatal server error: Caught signal 4 173.14.20 legacy driver on GeForce FX5200

I'm using the 173.14.20 legacy driver with a PCI GeForce FX5200 on a Debian Lenny system running on a Mini-ITX (EPIA-M motherboard).

startx fails with:

giving up.
xinit: Connection reset by peer (erron 104): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

/var/log/Xorg.log.0 ends with:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80c91ce]
1: [0xb7f98400]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 4. Server aborting

I get the same error on the same machine with Debian Etch (oldstable). I also get the same error with earlier versions of the driver from the archive. The driver has failed on two identical machines.

But, surprisingly, I do have 173.14.20 running on a third identical machine (originally Sarge, now Etch). Something really subtle must be going on. I've attached nvidia-bug-report.log.gz from the broken machine and working-nvidia-bug-report.log.gz from the working machine.

[As an aside, I also had 1.0.8776 running successfully on all these machines last week before upgrading them. 1.0.8776 doesn't build on lenny and gives the list of errors in the attached nvidia-installer.log---but given this is no longer an active driver perhaps we should ignore this.]

Any help much appreciated.

hey... I'm having a very similar problem.

I'm using the 173.14.20 legacy driver with an AGP GeForce FX5200 on Gentoo Linux 2.6.30 r2

this is what I get:
$startx
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.28161

xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I'm not sure if our problems are the same as mine is AGP and yours is PCI but I thought maybe this would help spawn a discussion that would help both of us.
