Default 190.09 -> desktop freeze and Xid errors with 7300GS

Hello all,

I'm retrying the brand new 190.09 beta driver with my geforce 7300 SE on my k9vgm-v mobo.

I'm using the latest jaunty ubuntu. It meets the following requirements:

* development tools like make and gcc are installed
* the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is installed
* the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option
* /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx does not exist
* /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel does not exist

The linux-restricted-modules or linux-restricted-modules-common packages are present, but I don't want to uninstall them.

But:
/etc/default/linux-restricted-modules -> does not exist
and
/etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common -> added DISABLED_MODULES="nv nvidia_new"

The file /lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia_new_installed does not exist.

The pci=nommconf kernel parameter is set in the menu.lst.

The driver is installed through a sh as root. The installation process runs fine.

But everything ends up with "xid" bad news after a very short while:

I've read the bug report log (as far as I can understand it), but no error appears anywhere.

There is no particular action to cause a Xid-crash. Even doing nothing may do it.

The screen and the mouse are frozen dead, but the magi keys alt/gr + prtscr + R + E + I +
S + U + B still allow to reboot cleanly.

As I said in another post, Ive tried :
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.18-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.53-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.60-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.19-pkg1.run
cudadriver_2.3-beta_linux_32_190.09.run

I really think something is wrong either on my system (mobo, bios, other) or the card itself (may be faulty, but no way to tell).

Regards,

MC

Tell that the Nvidia Vdpau Team on launchpad.net. They are hosting a PPA with the 190.09 driver for Ubuntu Jaunty.

Indeed there are 190.09 drivers available in that site from NVidia.

A comment from NVidia would be really appreciated!

190.09 is indeed only available under an NDA. I haven't seen the Launchpad project that's distributing it, but if they are, they shouldn't be.

What's the point in keeping new driver versions "secret"? I mean, if you don't want to provide any support for these development versions, just don't answer any questions. But why shouldn't the community be allowed to test them (taking the risk to break their system)?

Most companies feel their software is special. They place high value in it. It's an obsolete mentality here in the Internet age. These sort of decisions are mostly made by people with no programming background what-so-ever. They feel it's a business/marketing/logical decision. I don't know the feelings or positions of the nVidia forum members, but I'm 99% sure they don't make the decisions about driver releases.

nVidia wouldn't lose a stock point. They wouldn't lose an OEM customer. They wouldn't lose anything by releasing such a driver. It's corporate politics and old school policies that keep such things still in place.

Software shouldn't cost anything. It's just 1s and 0s aligned up in a defined way. The money generating service should be customer service or physical hardware.

I'm actually not against making money by selling software products, everybody has to feed his family, but in this case, a driver is more like a service, you get for free included in the product you bought, because otherwise it would be pretty useless...
I also understand that these drivers have a market value because it cost much money to develop them, but as they are closed source it's pretty hard to steal anything from them.

Maybe one of the developers can give us a reasonable reason for not releasing this new fabulous driver to the community!

what a nonsense.

you pay for the work needed to "align your 1s and 0s".
if some don't want get paid for "aligning", it's their choice. not yours.
