Default glDrawBuffer with FBO, high CPU usage


in my GPGPU application i do a lot color buffer changes while an FBO is bound, which results in a 100% CPU usage.
to be exact im doing about 40000 switches per second.

does someone know why switching color buffers is so expensive on the CPU side?

my CPU is a XEON Conroe @ 3.6GHZ
and the GPU is a GTX260.
