Default UseEvents and KDE 4.3 direct rendering broken with 190.16

Hi.

Just tried 190.16 w/ my 9800 GTX+ and ran into several problems:

+ short stalls when starting a 3D application
+ short stalls when performance levels changed
+ overall sluggish system w/ composition and 3D

I narrowed it down to UseEvents which I had on by default. Deactivating it solves the problem. I made further tests: using MSI or not makes no difference which I also have on by default.

One thing I have noticed too is that setting "directing rendering" in KDE 4.3 results in a sluggish desktop which is more noticable than with 185.18.10 which I used previously (skipped 185.18.14 for the MSI bug).

I have attached two bug reports... w/ UseEvents and w/o UseEvents.

Hope that helps.

I agree with RobotMarvin that stalls are definitely related to UseEvents setting. Initiating rubberband selection in Dolphin (KDE 4.3) makes system freeze for short periods of time. Though when using Firefox I haven't noticed any freezes. Turning off desktop composition makes problem disappear. I hope this problem will be fixed soon. Thank you.

Same here - except for me I'm using compiz and I saw stalls and slowdowns related to firefox. With top running, I'd see a pause (whole desktop appears to freeze) and when it comes back I see firefox and compiz running at 100%.

UseEvents = false seems to have fixed it for me as well.

It's not just with KDE...

Any Qt based UI (like MythTV) will hangs for a few seconds when UseEvents is set to True.

As soon as UseEvents is set to false, no more hang.

While it hangs for a few seconds, the machine become unresponsive, I can't ping it either.. then it comes back to normal

This happens with both Qt 3 and Qt 4.4

I've seen problems with UseEvents on GeForce 8 and up GPUs too, but haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet. I'd recommend not using UseEvents until then.

Seems counter-intuitive, but I do seem to get a nice boost in compositing performance and responsiveness by unchecking "direct rendering" in the KDE4 control panel, like the OP mentioned.

This is on my GeForce 7000m/nForce 610m-based acer laptop. Running Karmic Alpha 3(ish) 64-bit. UseEvents doesn't seem to cause trouble with this setup.

I think I'll try disabling direct rendering on my GeForce 8800GTS 640MB equipped desktop later. (Which stalls w/ UseEvents)

Disabling UseEvents fixed my problems on a GTX 260. However, turning off direct rendering in KDE (4.2.4) gave me a performance drop. With Blur, Translucency, and Wobbly Windows turned on, I grabbed a fullscreen window and moved it back and forth between monitors quickly. With direct rendering on, the FPS never dropped below the maximum of 100. With direct rendering off, it would idle at 100 fps but drop to about 30 when I started moving the window. I am using the Texture from Pixmap method.

Not just restricted to KDE -- also seen on Compiz/Gnome and Geforce 9 hardware.

I can confirm. UseEvents=off and all those small freezes disappeared in my box. The freezes are not random, in fact, I can replicate a freeze in Plasma loading Amarok, and so on. Qt 4.6 should improve the reliability in that matter supporting some unsupported X extensions that have been supported in GTK+ for ages. Should we stop bugging NVidia and start bugging Qt? It's an idea...

No, it's definitely a driver bug and you shouldn't bother the Qt guys about it. Like I said, I'd recommend just not using UseEvents on G8x or higher for now.
