This is by no means a direct attack to you, but PC gamers are going APESH!T over the fact that he wants there to be proper support for gamepad controls. At no point is he saying "meh, let's screw over pc gamers". He's got the mouse+keyboard formula pretty much set in stone, so the devs are devoting resources to make sure the game feels right with a gamepad. Now everyone is crying heresy.
Relax man. I think 90% of the complaints are about the possibility of the PC game being cut due to lack of space on DVDs. Hardly anyone is even complaining about the controller in this thread.

Actually, if you go back a little you'll see that there was a lot regarding the gamepad shenanigan. There's also another thread where they don't stop talking about it (the one with the magazine scans).

To be honest, when I read the "cut" thing I figured they were just talking about how they want to physically divide the game in two, as in the part of the story where you're going to have to swap from disc A to disc B. It didn't seem to me that they were talking about cutting away content. Is this just me? If it is, I apologize, and I blame it on my psychotic rage on account of the gamepad discussions from earlier.

I just had to poke you because the guy that made you freak out didn't even mention controllers.

The main article is just piecing together bits from other articles and drawing its own conclusion. The PC version will always be THE version to get.

With EA now on Steam, size is no longer an issue. They can simply do a "digital distribution" only version to prevent piracy and not spend money on DVDs and packaging, as well as worrying about how much will fit on 3 or 4 DVDs.

Also, apart from maybe the posted article(I cant be bothered re-reading it to refresh my memory), they have never said the PC version will be "cut", infact, the impression I get is all versions will be equal, in terms of content, obviously PC has higher resolutions, better AA/AF and will stream the megatextures faster, if anything does end up getting cut, itll only be the 360 version that gets cut down so it can fit on 2 dvds, to avoid disc swapping while almost to the end of 1 world(since the game is apparently split into 2 worlds, so you can disc swap when you go to the second world, rather then arbitarily in the middle of a world somewhere).
Since the PC version will be installed, this wont matter, and the PS3 version will have bluray so they can have the same content as the PC version without swapping discs at all.

People need to stop jumping at everything before they understand the facts

Actually it seems both consoles will not be optimal for Rage...

On the PS3 because the slower rasterizer, it will run at 30FPS compared to 360.

On the 360 you have the limited DVD Rom capacity.

So if you want the best it seems like PC is the way to go

The PC version being the best is kind of a no-brainer... even if the "cut" content thing means less rooms or somesuch thing, they will cut them from all versions, so it matters little which version you get.

Yeah at least in Carmack's hands I'm getting a great PC game that happens to be multiplatform. I trust that man.

I'm still very optimistic about this game but I did stumble across a very old (2007) tech demo of idtech5 and Rage. During the video, Carmack was basically explaining the engine in detail and one of the things he mentioned was how they would have to cut graphics back to achieve 60hz (60fps) on the consoles, where as they can do significantly more with a 30fps goal.

The first thing that popped into my mind was Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

On PC, the game can be unlocked to run at any framerate you want and it looks and runs incredibly smooth on modern hardware. Its really a fantastic engine...

BUT... the animations were locked at 30fps it looks SOOOO jerky that it almost gives me a headache when driving a vehicle. It even does it when you lay prone because the view is tied to the crawling animation. So when you stand you're getting a responsive 60fps+ mouse movement, but when you go prone or do anything related to vehicles your view is moving at 30fps. And when enemies or vehicles move by they're noticeably jerky and stuttering, no matter how smooth the game is running.

I really hope id doesn't do this to Rage. Quake Wars used id technology but it was made by Splash Damage, and Carmack was always a framerate junky in the past, so I'm hoping they stick to their roots and don't force 30fps\30hz into the PC version in any way.
