Default Hwo to quit the X

I am a noob in Linux and when i try to install the NVIDIA drivers, I read taht on the screen, what can I do ?

" You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at www.nvidia.com."

Help me plz ...

1. Move to another console with Alt-F1 (or Ctrl-Alt-F1, I can't remember right now). X runs natively in console 7 (F7).

2. Type 'INIT 3'. That should shut down the X Server.

3. Install the drivers. Modify the XF86Config (or XF86Config-4, depends on your distro). Use vi to do that.

4. Type 'startx'

In this way, you don't have to modify other config files and you will keep the graphic login (GDM).
