Default CPU usage spikes when monitor is stanby of off

Yesterday I've discovered a very strange problem after update of nvidia-drivers from 180.60 to 185.18.29. After unlocking my computer I saw CPU usage spikes in Gkrellm monitor. The CPU usage is back to normal if the monitor is "on" (output of xset -q). I've checked this issue using ssh from another computer:
CPU usage is fine until monitor is on, if you execute "xset dpms force standby" I can see very short (~1sec) CPU usage jumps every 2-3 seconds in htop for the X process.
That's definitely a regression...
I'd appreciate any ideas concerning this situation.

I've tested the latest nvidia drivers (190.42) with xorg-server 1.6.5 and 1.7.1 and this bug is still there!
Is it only me having this silly bug?
