What game looks comparable to this and runs at 60 frames on consoles? none, id has pulled off a blinder with this so far. It's a ****load of headroom for the pc version, hopefully id will make use of extra GPU+Processing power our rigs have.

The engine looks nothing like Fallout 3's.

Fallout 3 doesn't even have any shadows and the terrain is made up of tiled textures with almost no variation at all.

DX10 is not a magic that makes a game looks good. Its all about programming. Besides, id always used OpenGL in their engines and in most cases it rivaled its DX counterpart graphics and even trumped it in some cases.

And why not use that alternative, more complex technology for the PC now? We already have much more power than the consoles...
I think its important to keep in mind what he said about the resources we have now being plenty to make good games.

What that means to me is, they're going to do as much as they possibly can with the technology that most people can make use of. Judging from what they've shown us so far, its going to be quite impressive anyway.

Personally, I'm looking forward to playing a brand new game at any resolution I want with AA and AF (if AF works with megatexturing) at 60fps constant without needing tri-SLI GT300s and a 5Ghz i7. Also, its likely that we'll be able to tweak lots of settings since this is an id engine.

I expect to be able to adjust the LOD distance of the megatextures... if that's even necessary.

It's a great looking game. iD more than any other company is able to give us a movie/cg like feel. This probably comes down to the great animation more than anything (and the focus on cinematic lighting).

Hmm, ala Oblivion/Fallout3 me thinks Carmack underestimates the importance of mods.

Then again, if Rage is more of a linear game then yeah, mods aren't gonna matter much.

Interesting that Rage will not have day/night cycle.

Yeah, his comments on mods were pretty sad... I am not a big supporter of mode usually, but certain games, especially multiplayer games, can really be put on a whole other level through mods. Left 4 Dead is a recent example...

The rest of that interview was great and damn interesting though...
