Downloaded XP VM from microsoft and installed. My 8800 GTX is running as an S3 something VM. Meaning 3d acceleration is not, is there a way to load drivers for the VM?

I believe I read that 3d acceleration was not available for virtual XP running in Windows 7.

Yes that appears to be the case which makes the VM worthless for me since application I use needs accererated DX. So for compatibility of XP programs it may do well with non graphical applications but that is about it. I conclude better just to dual boot if I go to Win 7 which I like better then Vista but not significant enough for me to bother if I have problems with programs I still use.

I'm wondering about W7's XP Compatability Mode...wouldn't that suffice for running XP in a virtual environment, without a driver problem?

The XP Virtual machine is still a virtual machine, and does not use the host video card.

From my experience it is slow with anything graphical, basically looks like cpu is doing all the graphic work.
Basically you are running an operating system inside another operating system, a double boot so to speak. You have modern Win 7 interface with a window of XP running with old interface lol. Just doesn't look to useful in the end at all.

It's useful for productivity apps. A lot of businesses didn't move to Vista because they have custom software for XP, it would have been to expensive to get the software rewritten, and it was too risky to try it anyway, having an XP VM means MS can talk more places into moving to 7 as they still have XP if they need.

![]() VM is awesome for what it does. You are essentially running 2 os's, in the case of Win 7 and XP, in the same boot session at the same time. I think that's pretty cool. And it is interchangeable as well. It's the way it should be, without having to reboot or log out or whatever. No graphics acceleration should be the least of the worries for the majority of people. |
