Default Will Modern Warfare 2 be the first $60 PC game?

Story: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/mo...g-to-pc-games/

It seems like Activision is going to try and get $60 for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2.

This is pretty absurd, considering the extra $10 for the console versions goes to licensing fees and such that PC developers do not pay.

how do you know the extra $10 goes to licensing fees?

game prices have been the same for the past 15 years, do you expect them to stay the same forever?

Wolfenstein is already being sold for 50 here so 60$ doesn't seem that much.

I dont really remember if games always cost $50, but I do know they did atleast in 2001, and $50 in 2001 adjusted for inflation is equal to about $60 in 2009. Not to mention the increase in development costs over that period of time. For the moment, other costs for pc gamers have decreased dramatically, $339 for a GTX 285? never would have had that a few years back. For a while, atleast with the launch of the X1900XTX and 8800GTX the retail price was $650. Granted, that's all due to respective comebacks by Nvidia and ATI in each generation, but as PC gamers we cant really complain about a $10 hike in game prices.

I rarely buy games at full price anyway. If you look around enough you can find pretty much any game for $30-$40 shortly after release.

Actually having to raise the price is far different from what activision is doing here - they're simply doing it because they can. If this turns out to be successful you can be pretty sure that every other publisher will soon follow suite.

There's a reason why the price has stayed the same over the years.

PC games have always been $50. I don't recall a time when they were not.

And when console games raised the standard to $60 it was said and understood that it was due to the greater license fees, dev kit costs and other things associated with consoles. That was why PC games did not rise in cost at that time, and why first-party games were supposed to be $50 still, though Microsoft did away with that quickly.

Do you really think Modern Warfare 2 cost more to develop than Modern Warfare? This is just a money grab.

My point about development costs was more long term, as in from 2001 to now. I don't like seeing game prices rise, but for whatever reason, licensing fees or just because publishers can get away with it, $50 today is worth less then it was 10 years ago. I don't see how similar margins, let alone better margins then were achieved then can be possible now at $50. I don't want to pay $60 for a pc game, but I think its been a long time coming, we're lucky $50 prices have lasted this long.

Compared to the orignal CoD, released in 2003, I dont think Activision is making the same or more per sale with CoD4. MW2 is a different story, because it is a tweak of CoD4. However, in general, for new releases, I think publishers and developers have been making slightly less per copy then they used to, so much more is poured into advertising and effects so that these titles can be noticed by a large enough audience.
