Default Problems with Shiny's Sacrifice from Steam

I just bought a good old classic from Shiny, Sacrifice!

Since it just came up on steam I assumed that they had some minimum standards for compatibility and/or performance. But no. Regardless of my graphics settings I keep getting flickering textures, huge framerate hiccups / regular framerate drops to zero etc, and often the game just crashes. It's totally unplayable. I've also found the trigger: it plays absolutely fine when just walking around the landscape but put almost any amount of creatures in the field of view and it all goes bad (only exception I've found is the tutorial familiar thing).

If anyone else takes the chance and buy this otherwise fantastic game off Steam, let me know if it works for you or how you may fix it

Forceware: 186.18
OS: Windows 7 64bit RC

FUI I have tried various compatibility modes without any luck.

Fantastic game indeed. I know there was a patch for the retail version of the game but i think its included in Steam.

It's on GOG.com for cheaper, and was modified by GOG for Windows Vista compatability. Check their forums though, if there was still an issue it would have been solved by their awesome tech support staff and posted as a solution in the forum.

In short, why did you buy this on Steam?

Because I'm a moron ok?

I just love Steam, I love having my games together at one place, I love steam community chat during any game.

My desperate ass just tried to purchase it off GOG.com, but they wouldn't take my VISA for some reason. I'm strongly opposed to this in principle, buying the same game twice the same day, but I just want to play it so bad

Hahaha... don't sweat it, I like Steam for the same reasons. I even looked at that Fallout collection twice, despite owning the Gog versions.

Anyway, try the Sacrifice forum on GOG and see if anyone had your issue and if there is a solution. Those boards have been amazingly helpful for me in the past with GOG titles. Even though GOG updates the game and such, some still have issues, and they solve them quickly. It really is the service I praise that site for, less than the lack of DRM and low price that most others praise them for.

LOL same problem, guess I got pwned. Oh well that's what you get from being too desperate.. I don't really mind supporting such a great game with a small extra amount of 6$ although I'd really like it to work!!

Well now I feel like an ass.

There's nothing on the forums about your issue?

No need, it was my decision after all and I am rather weak on certain things!

I read through 3 pages of forum threads and only found one guy describing roughly the same problem as me. Fortunately, you can say, it's also one of the newest threads. "Rougly the same" means that I probably get a little less visible glitches than him, but I AM getting the massive FPS slowdowns. I.e. the FPS going to hell, only sometimes, but not always accompanied by visible graphics glitches.

Thread is here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/sacrific...hical_glitches

The only suggestion so far is disabling 3D hardware acceleration, but I can find no such thing in the my Nvidia Controlpanel.

Don't be afraid to email GOG support, they always respond quickly when I do it, and with friendly support.

As for diabling that, I am sure someone here will know. I have never done it myself.

Tried writing to Steam Support (who told me to gtfo and contact Interplay support - apparently it's not their problem if they sell games through their service that doesn't work at all on modern hardware), tried writing to GOG.com support (no answer yet) and I just wrote to interplay support. I've seen forums with others having the same problems as me, no solution yet. Some are even requested a CD Key at startup which is NOT included with the game either on Steam or GOG.com, although I read on their forum that you can write to GOG.com support and have them send you one.

I think it's pretty bad business ethics to sell a game that isn't playable on modern hardware. I've pretty much given it up by now. So now I can only just positively surprised if a solutions turns up...

Yeah, Steam make no promises what-so-ever... they would sell a game they knew did not work on modern hardware, they just don't care. Hell, half the time they don't even notice a game needs a key until after they start selling it and people complain.

GOG advertises full compatability on new hardware though... they supposedly reconfigure the games to do so. I have never had one issue with any GOG games, bar Broken Sword 2 not playing videos, and that was solved in a day with an email to support (I needed a codec).

Anyway, I hope GOG get back to you. They were always helpful to me.
