The current PhysX does not require CUDA hardware to run. It runs on software fine. The only major way to speed up generalized physics calculations is simply to have less of them. The whole purpose of CUDA/OpenCL is for general purpose computing like Physics which has for the longest time been done on the CPU, but not to the extent that is being done now. It's not the same as optimizing for different rendering paths where one GPU may handle a different render better than the other.

It's basically all math and you simply need enough processors running the calculations. The more processors you have doing the math, the more speed you get. Would be interesting to see exactly how much real world Physics calculations were used in older games compared to what is being done now in these newer games.

And an argument can be made that Nvidia does not help with optimizing(no matter how small) the effects for the CPU since it is in their best interests to optimize for CUDA. Which leaves the developer themselves to optimize it.

Finally got around to playing the demo of this game.

I have to say I'm extremely impressed. The production values are extremely high. This is one of the most polished games I've seen in quite some time.

The cut scenes are movie quality and the gameplay seems to mesh pretty well with them. The controls are excellent too.

I started playing with my new 360 controller just to try it out (I mostly got it for racing games) and it seemed to work alright, but I always prefer keyboard and mouse so I set the controller down and started using KB&M without even having to go to the menu to change anything. The KB&M controls seem to be pretty much perfect. Its responsive and intuitive.

The gameplay seems promising as well since it has a mix of problem solving and button mashing.

If I had more time to dedicate to brand new games I'd probably go right out and buy this, but I have a couple games I still want to finish and I haven't had time to play those so I'll wait a bit on this one... but its a definite buy for me.

EDIT: BTW, I'm definitely keeping an eye on this developer in the future.

This is only their second game.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing. Their first was like some download casual thing too, wasn't it? The question I have is who at Eidos approved them as developers! They must have made one kick-ass presentation of their vision.

Luckily, they had the talent to back it up.

I am buying this on release, despite having so many games to play.

Yeah, Rocksteady is definitely a dev to look out for now. I was hearing rumors of them doing the next Hitman and I was super excited... supposedly it is not the case, but if it was I would be very happy even though I loved Blood Money.

It may be their second game, but the staff could very well be veterans of other successful studios. On the other hand they could all be a bunch of nubs who just know how to make a good game.

They should work on all superhero games. They truly know how to give the characters justice.

So, is this game worth getting? I want to get it this weekend, but if it has no re-play value, then I will pass.

Also, do I need a joystick controller to play it?

works perfectly with keyboard and mouse and you will have to wait till 15th for the good version.

Here is a trick to enable full PhysX under ATI cards (and not take a huge performace hit), and some screenshots of it. With this method the game runs much faster than just enabling PhysX on game menu (5fps vs 30+). It looks like developers could have enabled some of PhysX effects in software for non-nVidia cards, but they refused to do it, probably because of partnership with nVidia.

The guy says this trick works with D2D version of the game (because of a bug in non-nVidia detection routine), but not sure about retail.
