Question Different resolution Monitor <-> TV possible?

Hi all!

I'm facing a problem while trying to configure TV-OUT on my GeForce 4 Ti-4200 Graphics Card. Using SuSe Linux 8.2 and the attached XF86Config File, I want to have a resolution of 1024 x 768 on my monitor and a full screen view on my TV.

The problem is that my TV only supports a resolution of 800 x 600 Pixels. Using metamodes, I achieved that the TV-OUT works, but it only shows an 800 x 600 sector of the fullscreen that is 1024 x 768. Thus, I only see a part of the monitor output.

Does anyone know if and how I can fix this? When I use Windows XP it works properly, so I suppose it should work on Linux as well, shouldn't it?

Thanks in advance,

timo

sorry, I thought the attached file would be displayed, as it was a .txt file. For those of you, who don't want to download the XF86Config, I'll post it now:

Having different resolutions on both screens while retaining fullscreen is impossible. On windows it is not possible either. What you are likely referring to is the following. Likely you want to use tvout for movie playback, right?
On windows the tvout side zooms in to achieve fullscreen when videoplayback is used.

When you want to watch movies on your TV using Linux, you shouldn't use Cloned mode at all. You should one big desktop. Then you use a media player that supports "Xinerama" for example mplayer does (has special commandline features), xine supports it too (but not sure how to use it on xine ..). Using this you can get fullscreen on the tv, while it still is at a different (virtual) resolution.

Wow, that answer came fast, Thunderbird!

When I'm using Windows, I see the same on my TV as on my monitor (and not only when I'm watching movies)! I am sure about this, I am in clone mode there!

But if your solution works, it might just be fine too. Could you explain, how I turn on the xinerama you talked about? (Forgot to mention that I'm a Linux noob, sorry...).

Thanks in advance, again!

On windows when you use cloned mode, the tv zooms in ...

When you are not using Cloned mode but one of the modes to get a "big" desktop, nvidia enables an option called "Xinerama". That extension is related for apps to get info about the amount of displays and other multihead/multicard stuff. Install for example mplayer and read the help files for info about xinerama (or mplayer --help I think). Or just launch the player on the tv. (but you likely need to state that it should use xinerama ..)
