Default X crashes (signal 11, libglx error) seemingly at random, 7400go Ubuntu 9.04

The problem: My X server is crashing (black text-mode screen, then back to graphical login screen) periodically, typically several times a day. I cannot make this happen at will, but it doesn't seem to be entirely random. I haven't seen it happen when the computer is idle, and it seems to occur when I'm doing "something", which could really be anything, such as scrolling a page, deleting a Firefox tab, dropping a control onto a form in Glade. No pattern other than it seems to happen in conjunction with other things.

Looking at the X log always shows something like this:

0: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x813518b]

Saw signal 11. Server aborting.
 ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
This has been happening only for the last week or so. I installed the beta 190.18 driver on 7/29/09, and it worked fine until recently. Today I changed to the stable 185.18.36, and the problem still exists.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell XPS m1210 laptop with a 7400go GPU. I have Compiz enabled. I monitor the temperature and am sure that no overheating is occurring. Debug log is attached.

Having my X session likely to terminate at any random time has rendered my computer unusable for serious work. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.
