Default ZOTAC ION nvidia 9400m driver issue

Whenever I install the nvidia driver, ubuntu always restarts into low graphics mode.

Ubuntu 9.04
ZOTAC IONITX-B
nvidia 9400M video card

When I run nvidia-detector, it returns none. Not sure if that is related.

I searched and searched, but I can't find anywhere that tells of how to fix this. But I have read about people using this board as their HTPC front end and it playing HD movies easily. So somehow this driver does work.

Any ideas what I should do?

So I got it working with the 185.18.14 driver, but playing back movies that are HD is still choppy.

I am using mythtv as my frontend. It seems to be working ok now that I told it to use mplayer as the playback program. Anyone have any advise about this setup?

By default mythtv uses the CPU to decode video unless you tell it otherwise; if you want to use VDPAU (ie use the ion to decode your video) you'll need to either be using 0.22 trunk or the jyavenard repositories for ubuntu, rather than any vanilla 0.21 mythtv. I'm running the avenard 0.21 version on an ion, and it decodes 1080i easily. You will need 2Gb of RAM though - 1Gb will not allow enough shared RAM for the ion to decode HD video.
