Boy, I loved the System Setup menu that came up after installing a DOS game. You had to select your sound card (Sound Blaster 16? or AWE32?) and then choosing the IRQ, and then doing the same for MIDI sound, and then testing them by playing some random sound file.

Setting up a multiplayer game was fun too, you could choose between modem or serial, or if you actually paid for a service like TEN or Kali (BAH!).

Ahhh, the IRQs, multiple CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT options, HIMEM.SYS only, or I need EMM386.EXE too?. I remember I had a boot menu with 4 or 5 options in MS-DOS, depending on the base memory I needed for a concrete game.

Thank God for DOS4GW, it was a blessing when it arrived...

I remember those crazy config.sys and autoexec.bat lines.

I was mightily impressed back then when a 4mb ram pc was able to make a ramdisk with 2mb in it.

It beats the hell out of 360k floppy disks.

Those were the days. I remember installing that large SBAWE32 card and getting MIDI sound in Doom.

Is playing the actual game properly any good?

I bought the game when it came out and that is about the most fun you can have with the game. Sadly the storyline and missions were really boring to me... unless of course the mission was using the hammer to break ****.

I agree with you Narcissist, things were much harder in the old days. It's far easier to get things running now than ever.

The old days were complicated as well. I had to sometimes figure out which sound card I had to pick that was compatible with my sound card (Becuase of course they didnt have mine in the selection list). And then they had like various video card to pick from in the graphics menu like Renderition Verite, Matrox, S3 Savage. Of course, mine wasn't in the list, so I had to mess around with ****. The old days was freaking complicated to get games to run. The really OLD OLD days of Spectrum Z80 was even more complicated. In order to get Spy Hunter to run in color on it, all the planets had to be in alingment. It would literally only run like three times a year properly (it was on magnetic tape and it usually didn't work at all).

Well I've started doing the actual missions and some are fun. The destruction ones are always decent, however the rescue hostage crap is awful.

Grand Theft Red Faction is overall pretty decent, but I'm glad I didn't pay full retail for it.

Also it's weird that you're playing as a hybrid of Wolverine and Thor. Your health regenerates and you smash stuff with Mjöllnir.
