They don't make games like that anymore though... awesome cinemas, fast-paced fun gameplay. so much atmosphere...
Dark Forces 2? I had it running just fine... actually posted some shots of it in the thread.

I played Dark Forces in DOSBox about 2 years ago. Its an excellent game and has a great "classic FPS" feel to it.

It definitely won't run properly on a modern system without DOSBox though.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 doesn't work for me in Vista though. I had to play it on my XP partition but since my last reinstall I don't have XP on here anymore. It worked great on this system in XP though.

It had color issues, that's all, and I fixed them... works great now.

Playing Dark Forces 2 in 1080p is insane.

So Jedi Knight without it's soundtrack? Why would they do such a thing? I'm not buying it for sure now. I really hope they fix it a some point though

It's basically free if you want to buy the others... they did it because supposedly it is impossible to rework the cd music into a download with no cd playing.

Just FYI, you get music in the cinemas, an the atmosphere stuff, just not in the levels themselves.

It IS a bummer, but... oh well.

Well, impossible on the intended budget for getting on steam and running prolly.
But not impossible as in it cannot be done, unless they for some reason threw away the source code.
Surely they´ve been doing some digging in the code to get it to run without the CD and not crash when calling for the music tracks?

Someone said they emailed and were told the source code is indeed lost. Who really knows though.

They did some tinkering for sure... the menus and videos are forced windowed mode, but the game loads in fullscreen, for instance.

Music tracks were redbook (audio cd). To get them to work they'd have to mess around and try and get the engine to play the music as mp3/ogg etc. Not as easy as it sounds for a game of it's age given the assumed budget and time frame.

EDIT

LOL. Source probably is lost. A dev from the glory days probably made off with it. ::

I was told by someone on WSGF that we will never see a user mod to replace the music either, since the only way that was possible was id releasing the source code or whatever.

Sad.

Honestly though, 4 levels in (with mah kick ashe litesabur) I hardly notice the lack of music... if it was on, then gone, I probably would, but with it never being there you just don't notice really.

The music in videos and dialogue and effects all play perfectly, and really that is all that is essential. I mean, don't get me wrong, if I had the CDs I would probably mess around and run the game on that, but I don't.
