I checked libvdpau_trace.so and it isn't a symbolic link. Should it be, and where should it point to?

I currently have the 190.40 driver and there is a libvdpau_trace.so.190.40 in /usr/lib. Comparing the two, they are completely different.

Probably one of both is installed through your distribution (and replaced the symbolic link)?

The .run installer installs one as /usr/lib/libvdpau_trace.so.<version>, which it shouldn't do. The presence of that file causes ldconfig to print a warning because it expects libvdpau_trace.so (without the version) to be a symlink to the versioned one. You can safely ignore the warning or delete /usr/lib/libvdpau_trace.so.<version> to make it go away.

AaronP : any particular reasons why libvdpau_trace doesn't have any versioning?

this breaks the debian packaging requirement ; should be something like libvdpau_trace.so.1 or something ...

libvdpau_trace doesn't need any versioning because both libvdpau.so and libvdpau_trace.so are built together from the same source package, and libvdpau_trace.so is only used by libvdpau.so; it's never "publicly" exposed.

I suppose there's some merit to the argument that because libvdpau_trace.so is a private/internal library, it should be placed into a sub-directory of /usr/lib. This seems slightly like Debian imposing arbitrary packaging restrictions on upstream packages though. I'll look into other packages/distros, and whether configure can allow distros to configure the package to work the way they want...
